日本の古陶磁

The hunt

We live in central Japan, in the old pottery country around Nagoya. Towns like Seto and Tokoname have been making ceramics for centuries, and around here, good pieces have a way of turning up if you know where to look.

So we look. We visit antique shops we've come to know, poke around flea markets on a good weekend, and follow tips from locals. A shopkeeper mentions a family selling off an old collection. Someone knows a house in the countryside, empty for years, with cupboards nobody has opened in a long time. We go see for ourselves.

It's slow, and honestly, that's the fun of it. You never know what you'll find. A teapot worn smooth from decades of daily use. A set of sake cups someone clearly loved. A vase from a kiln whose maker nobody remembers anymore.

These pieces were made to be used, and most of them still have plenty of life left. We clean them up, photograph them, and put them online for people who care about this kind of thing. Old Japanese craft, found where it was made, ready for a second life somewhere new.
