Moved to Kyoto in 1903, where he first learned under Makino Katsuji, then studied under Asai Chu at the Western Painting Institute. However, the next year he began work for a company as a military painter for the Russo-Japanese War and returned 3 years later in 1907. In 1910, he participated in the founding of the “Black Cat Association” with Kuroda Jutaro and others. After its disbandment, he formed a “Colleagues Association” with 5 like-minded Western-style painters of the Taisho Era, and while presenting his works took a job at the Mitsukoshi kimono fabrics store, from which he retired after 7 years, and he taught at Kwansei Gakuin Junior High School, from which he retired in 2 years. He traveled to China and Korea and became fascinated with ceramics. After his return to Japan in 1920, he went down the path of ceramics-making and produced mainly white porcelain and blue-patterned white porcelain. He formed the “Shining Association” with Kusabe Yaichi and others, and exhibited at the Japanese Art Exhibition in Paris, after which he was selected for a prize at the Imperial Exhibition. He was active in many techniques, forming the “Shinshu Association” in 1917 and the “Real Fine Industrial Arts Association” with Takamura Toyochika in 1921. He refrained from these activities following the war.
