Hakodate pottery 函館焼

This type of earthenware was started by the Hakodate bugyo in 1857 as a way to expand local industry. Adachi Iwaji, an instructive potter from Iwamura Domain in Mino Province was invited to start a kiln in Yachigashira, Hakodate.
He mainly produced blue and white ceramics and small items, but the kiln was abolished in 1862 due to economic issues caused by the cold climate and poor quality of the soil in this region.
