Real name Dorosuke, worked under the name Setsuzan. He was the son of Gentaemon Toshioki, 7th generation head of the Hagi-ware producing Miwa family. Succeeded his father as 8th generation Kyusetsu in 1865. Transferred the family to the 9th generation Setsudo in 1896 when he retired. Aside from his work as a potter, he was a loyal member of the Kiheitai militia under the Choshu samurai Takasugi Shinsaku during the Bakumatsu period, fighting in support of the Emperor against the Tokugawa shogunate.
