Takeuchi Seijiro 武内晴二郎

1921-1979maleBorn in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. His father was the first director of the Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki, and Seijiro grew up with art and art from an early age. He went on to study at the Faculty of Economics at Chuo University, but was mobilised as a student and enlisted in the army. He lost his left arm in China, but after being demobilised he began making pottery in his home town of Kurashiki and built his own kiln in 1960. Asamoto Kakuzan 浅本鶴山

1885-1957male Born in Tsuyama, he became a foster child of Fusakichi Asamoto (née Sugisaki), who had opened a kiln in Hayashida, at the age of two. When he was just 13 years old, around the time he graduated from school, his father Fusakichi, who had moved to a kiln in Ninomiya, Tsuyama City at the time, taught him how to use the potter’s wheel. Kurasaki Gonbee 倉崎権兵衛

?-1694malerakuzan potteryFounder of Izumo (Shimane Prefecture) Rakuzan ware. Also known simply as Gonbee. There were two brothers, Kurasaki Gorozaemon and Kanbei, among the Hagi potters, and it is assumed that Gonbee was the son of one of them. According to the “Kurasaki Family Work Record,” when Izumo domain lord Matsudaira Tsunachika opened an official kiln at Rakuzan in the eastern suburbs of Matsue in 1677, he made an appeal to the Hagi domain to invite a potter, and Gonbee was hired with 10 pieces of silver and four men’s allowance. Tanaka Sokei 田中宗慶

1535-?maleraku potteryGrandfather of Raku Chojiro’s wife. He is said to have taken the family name Tanaka and was a constant follower of Sen Rikyu. He also had close contact with Haruya Soen of Daitokuji Temple, the painter Hasegawa Tohaku, and others. In 1576, there is a record of his residence in Minamiinokuma-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Rakuchu, Kyoto (document from a Buddhist temple in Kyoto), where he was known as the best potter in Japan and ran a Raku pottery workshop with Chojiro. Tanaka Somi 田中宗味

early edo periodmaleraku potteryHis name is Shozaemon.He was the son of Tanaka Sokei and the elder brother of Kichizaemon Jokei.In the Raku kiln genealogy up to around Genroku (1688-1704), he was the second generation after Chojiro, and Jokei was the third generation, but for some reason, in the subsequent genealogy, Shozaemon was omitted from the Raku generation and Tsunekei was the second generation.Therefore, after that, Somi is treated as a side kiln. Nagae Sokichi 9th 九代 長江惣吉

1963-maleBorn in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, to a family that was a potter in the Edo period and a potter of Japanese tableware since the Meiji period, he began to reproduce yohen (pottery that changes color when fired) in 1995, following the research of his father, Nagae Sokichi VIII. In 1995, he took over the research of his father, Nagae Sokichi VIII, and started to reproduce Yohhen ware. Irie Mitoshi 入江光人司

1939-malebizen potteryIrie Mitoshi was born in Ibe, Bizen, in 1939 as the eldest son of craftsman Irie Kenji. He is a ceramist specialising in craftwork, which is becoming rare in Bizen. He specialises in small objects such as hohin (teapot) and incense burners. Tamai Rakuzan 3rd 三代 玉井楽山

1942-1990rakuzan pottery Tamai Rakusan III was born in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture in 1924 and graduated from the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts.After graduation, he studied under Ito Suiko and honed his skills in Kyoto.He later succeeded to the third generation of Rakusan pottery and took the name Tamai Rakusan. Sakazume Katsuyuki 坂爪勝幸

1947-maleBorn in Murakami, Niigata. Met Nagami Kojin while at university and set his sights on becoming a ceramic artist. Trained in the ceramic areas of Kyushu and learnt the basics. Influenced by Nakazato Takashi’s firing. In 1974, he conducted research on old kilns under Ji Soon Tak in Korea and learnt techniques for building snake kilns and climbing kilns. Built Miwa Kyusetsu’s climbing kiln in Hagi and Kikuchi Katsutaro’s climbing kiln in Hokkaido. Built a kiln of Miwa Ryusaku and engaged in production activities. Kobashigawa Eisho 2nd 二代 小橋川永昌

1909-1978maletsuboya potteryKobashigawa Eisho was a potter born in Tsuboya ,Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. Also known as Kobashigawa Nio II. He is considered one of the “Three Potters of Tsuboya” along with Kinjo Jiro and Arakagi Eizaburo. Eisho studied pottery under his father, Kobashigawa Nio. Kuroda Taizo 黒田泰蔵

1946–2021maleKuroda Taizo was born in 1946. After moving to Paris at the age of 20 and discovering ceramics in Canada in 1967, Kuroda returned to Japan and built a kiln in Ito City in 1991, and held his first solo exhibition in 1982. Kiyomizu Rokubey 8th 八代 清水六兵衛

1954-malekyo potteryRokubey VIII was born in Kyoto in 1954 as the eldest son of the seventh generation. After graduating from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University in 1979, he studied pottery wheel at the Kyoto Prefectural Vocational Training School for Ceramic Art and glazing at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Research Institute before starting his career as a potter. Juodo Shosen 十王堂松泉

1902-1990maletokoname potteryHis real name is Kataoka Akitsugu. He founded Kataoka factory in 1919 and started manufacturing plant pots. In 1950, he started exporting bonsai pots, and in 1970, he established Yamaaki Co., Ltd. and led Tokoname ware, one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, to the present day with his management skills. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1990 at the age of 89.He is famous for his carefully crafted vermiculated work bonsai pots and painted bonsai pots. (more…)

1943-maleReal name is Kataoka Sadamitsu. He is the second generation of Yamaaki-Seito pottery studio and has been calling himself “Ko-Shosen (means small Shosen)” since 1985.After the death of the founder of Yamaaki Seito, Juodo-Shosen I, Sadamitsu assumed the name “Shosen”.Unfortunately, Yamaaki Seito went out of business in 2013 during the third generation Shosen. Furuta Oribe 古田織部

1543-1615maleoribe pottery Among Sen no Rikyu’s followers, seven people are thought to have been particularly excellent. One of those seven was Furuta Oribe. Oribe was a military commander, and also the lord of a province. He is more famous as a tea master than as a potter, but Oribe-ware was founded under the guidance of Furuta Oribe and produced many tea utensils with eccentric and innovative shapes and patterns that Oribe liked. Aoki Ryota 青木良太

Fukagawa Porcelain 深川製磁

1894-arita porcelain Fukagawa Porcelain is a well-established manufacturer of Arita porcelain since 1894. Its history dates back to 1894 when it was established by the second son of Fukagawa Eizayemon of Koransha, which was also located in the town of Arita. The company is known for its clear blue dyeing and red painting, and the blue dyeing is also called “Fukagawa blue” and is well known by many people. Kumano Kurouemon 熊野九郎右ヱ門

1955-maleechizen potteryKumano Kurouemon’s kiln is virtually flat, angled at a mere two degrees. If a kiln is too steep, the heat keeps escaping upward. When using a flat kiln for firing, the kiln interior is able to reaches high temperatures due to heat pressure. [According to Kunamo,] flames survive at high temperatures and repeat oxidation and reduction of their own accord. 1904-The company was founded in 1904 by Morimura Ichizaemon (1839-1919) as Nihon Toki General Partnership Company. Its predecessor, Nihon Toki, was the first company in Japan to produce high-end Western tableware, which was exported in large quantities to Europe and the United States by the Morimura Group, a pottery and porcelainware trading company, during the Meiji era and before World War II. The early products were handmade and known for the beauty of their painting and the delicacy of their workmanship. Aoya Gen’emon 粟生屋源右衛門

1797-1863malekutani porcelainSon of Aoya Genbei, a potter in Komatsu, Kaga Province (Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture). Using Toko, the same pen name as his father. At the Wakasugi Kiln, Aoya Gen’emon worked hard to acquire pottery-making skills under Honda Teikichi, and became a master potter at a young age, but he continued to study the style of Kutani ware, later called “Blue Kutani,” under the instruction of Teikichi. Honda Teikichi 本多貞吉

In 4th year of the Bunka period, he established a kiln with Aoki Mokubei at Kasugayama in Kanazawa, Kaga, and started the revival of Kutani ware.Mokubei began to produce mainly daily utensils copied in red overglaze enamels, but was forced to return to Kyoto halfway through the project due to disagreements with the clan. Kakurezaki Ryuichi 隠崎隆一
